Evil D&D! – Day 17 D&D 40th Anniversary Blog Hop

This is day 17 of the of d20 Dark Ages’ D&D 40th Anniversary Blog Hop Challenge! Based off of the challenge’s prompts I will be sharing personal stories about my history with Dungeons & Dragons every day in February. Day 17: What was the first time that you heard that D&D was “evil”?

Besides the ambient “weirdo satanist wannabes play D&D” idea that all kids heard in the ‘90s, I have yet to have a real conversation about it to this day. As I started the hobby as an adult I was only surrounded by enthusiasts that understood the hobby for it was. I did have a hilarious conversation with my mother when I started playing. She was no doubt having flashbacks to Mazes & Monsters.

My first brush with an earnest assertion that D&D was evil was reading Jack Chick’s 1984 comic Dark Dungeons. You should stop whatever you’re doing and read it now. Brace yourself for ignorance!
