The Wolf Among Us Episode 4: In Sheep’s Clothing

Have you ever been left with such high expectations and what comes along afterwards… it isn’t bad, but it just didn’t live up to what you felt it should have been? That’s how I felt playing The Wolf Among us Episode 4 – In Sheep’s Clothing. It was like the Two Towers of computer games. (Yes I said it, The Two Towers is not my favorite! I’m ready to face the wrath of the Tolkienites!)When the previous episode ended – no matter your choices, you were introduced to Bloody Mary, and you got the ever lovin’ shite beat out of you, and left nearly dead in they alley. I seriously remember dropping the mouse and yelling NOOOOO at the monitor because I didn’t want them to leave the story at that arc – tell me what else happens! So I was super excited to get my hands on Episode 4, and pick up on how I was going to get my hands on Bloody Mary. And to be fair, the start of Episode 4 started off with a bang. And by bang, I mean you clicking furiously trying to help Bigby set the break in his arm by shoving the bone sticking out of his arm back to where it should be. I won’t lie, I did it, and I said “EWW EWW EWW EWW EWW” the whole time.

“I’m not mad, just disappointed. You had to bleed all over me??”

What happens after that though, felt like we were stagnant in the story telling. I mean, as a player you do have agency and can choose where you go next – I decided to go to the pawn shop and look into the Jersey Devil, where you make some threats, you have some fights, and you’re left with more questions than answers. In the end it didn’t really matter where I went first because it was clear i’d need to go to both locations to get more info.  For a game that hinges in the players making choices that will shape the story, I felt railroaded that my choices didn’t matter very much, and that the high point had already happened.

That said, at the end of the episode, we finally get to meet the Crooked Man. I know there is so much more to chew on in this story, and they keep setting us up for something awesome – in the next episode. It’s like the Adam West Batman shows where our hero’s are dangling off the cliff, and you know you have to tune come back to get the rest of the story. So while I was disappointed with how slow and little growth I felt there was in Episode 4, i’m still going to tune into the SAME BAT TIME, SAME BAT CHANNEL for The Wolf Among Us Episode 5: Cry Wolf.
