The garbage take on the controversy that Jon mentioned included this take:

A bunch of video game sites took Ellie’s story at face value and condemned gamers for a witch-hunt without learning the full truth of the matter. Then it turned out that Ellie was actually a male gamer to begin with.

To editorialize just a bit here, gaming sites were taking the witch-hunt at face value. They did not fabricate the behavior (i.e. the attempted doxxing, the threats, the general harassment aimed at “Ellie”) that they were addressing as toxic toward female players.
