Butt Dice – Day 8 D&D 40th Anniversary Blog Hop

This is day 8 of the of d20 Dark Ages’ D&D 40th Anniversary Blog Hop Challenge! Based off of the challenge’s prompts I will be sharing personal stories about my history with Dungeons & Dragons every day in February. Day 8: What was the first set of polyhedral dice you owned? Do you still use them?

D&D 40th Big DieI bought a plain set of solid colored polyhedrals in one of those long plastic tubes for my very first D&D experience. They’re long gone, but I’ve never been very sentimental about dice. I’ve purchased a few bulk sets of dice over the years and I usually just toss mitts of whatever’s handy. The only die I pick out specifically is my 55mm red d20 so all of the players can see my rolls as I GM. I’m pretty proud about my skepticism and do my best to stick to it even through the most disappointing of low-streaks.

I only have exception: I had a (normal sized) red d20 that I received as a Christmas present from one of my players. It was encased within a bar of soap; repeated washings would eventually release the die and allow you to pluck it out of the cinnamon scented bar. (They were made by “Geeky Clean,” a quick Google search reveals that they may have gone out of business. Sad.) By the time it was liberated from the soap it had grown spiteful and angry from from contact with my butt. It desired to share its suffering through rolling natural twenties. My players called it the Butt-Die and they came to fear it.

I wonder where that die went.
