Disney Gaydays (is awesome and you should go)

Disneyland? Gaydays? What the heck does that have to do with dorkadia? Contiune on, dear readers, and you will see.

Disneyland (and its bigger sibling, Disney World) is a geek paradise. I remember the first time I went as an awkward aviator-frame-clad, premature comb-over 11 year old, standing in awe of the technological wonder that makes Disney Magic happen. My sole mission at that age was to defy the magic – I HAD to figure it all out. I wanted to find every wire, every tube, every pneumatic cylinder that made the place run. I wanted to find the science behind the magic at Disneyland. And Dammit! I couldn’t. Those imagineers were just too good. But thanks to the internet, I now realize that the future robot uprising (aka audio animatronic apocolypse) will start in the quaint town of Anaheim California (or possibly, in Orlando, Florida).

But I digress. For the geeky among us, the Disney kingdom is a wonderful world of science and technology cleverly disguised as fairy tale magic. So for any die-hard Dorkadia reader, I implore you, it’s worth the visit. You might even have fun!

Disneyland is also one of the gayest places in the world. And it’s no surprise, ABC/Disney are notorious for their support of the Gay Agenda. But even for non-gays, this is a good thing. At Disneyland, you can be your geeky, awkward, Doctor-Who-loving self (editors note: The last time I was at Disneyland, it was the unofficial Doctor Who day at Disneyland and I saw more sonic screwdrivers running around Tomorrow land, than I saw at the Emerald City Comic Con!), and nobody cares (editors note: I CARE. It was awesome!). Disneyland as a kid is fun – magical, mysterious, wondrous. Disneyland as an adult is even better – easygoing, come as you are, everybody welcome. It’s a miracle of technology – robotics, pyrotechnics, and even Tactical Rendering of 3D Features. You can be a Blerd, a Dweeb, or even a Sissy, and Disney doesn’t care – as long as you pay their admission fee and buy their over-priced food. That’s the real magic of Disney, it’s the ultimate come-as-you-are capitalist equalizer.

If you combine the wonder of Disney’s geeky paradise with the live-out-loud gay lifestyle, it’s a match made in heaven (even if you don’t “swing that way”). Enter: Gaydays Anaheim, and it’s older sibling, Gay Days Orlando. They’re basically events for fun, open-minded people (gay, straight, trans, advocates, or otherwise) to meet up at Disneyland and Disneyworld, and just have fun. That’s it. If you like Circuit Parties, Pool Parties, and Bear Parties, they have those too, but if you just want to go enjoy the park with fun, like-minded people, you can do that too. And if you areĀ  somebody who just enjoys a discount, you can even get reduced prices on Disney park passes and hotels as part of the event.

Gay Days Anaheim is normally held the first weekend of October. In 2014 that’s Oct 3-5. It’s a great time of year to go Disney – the Halloween decorations are up, and man do they go all out. The weather is perfectly comfortable – 70s and 80s, dry and sunny. And best of all – the kids are back in school which means FEWER CROWDS!

So if you are a geek, a gay, or just like discounts and cool decorations, Disney Gaydays is for you, and I hope to see you there!
