D&D Movie – Day 24 D&D 40th Anniversary Blog Hop

This is day 24 of the of d20 Dark Ages’ D&D 40th Anniversary Blog Hop Challenge! Based off of the challenge’s prompts I will be sharing personal stories about my history with Dungeons & Dragons every day in February. Day 24: What is the first movie that comes to mind that you associate with D&D?

Without hesitation: Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings. I mean, is there any other choice? Let’s watch an ensemble cast save the world through swinging swords, uncovering magical secrets, and outwitting bad guys. They even gain levels and get new gear. They were definitely playing 4E, though, those orcs were minions.

Of course what makes a good movie doesn’t translate 1:1 with what makes a good table top game. (Quite the opposite, really.) So literally translating the Lord of the Rings trilogy into a tabletop experience would be pretty goofy. But the Lord of the Rings successfully demonstrates what I want my players to remember about my D&D games. Making tough choices, facing impossible odds, discovering a fantasy world rich with personality and history, and both triumph and loss, then hell. Mission complete. Every time I watch the movies I want to get my friends around a table to collectively create something as badass.

Looks like a pretty unbalanced party if you ask me. How many rangers do you need?
